【動画】リュウキュウウラボシシジミの求愛行動

昨年の大会で発表されたリュウキュウウラボシシジミの生態について、撮影者の宮城さんより当ブログへの掲載許可をいただいたので大会に参加できなかった方のためにも紹介したい。

リュウキュウウラボシシジミは日本では沖縄県の沖縄本島北部と西表島だけに生息する森林性のシジミチョウである。小型で目立たないことから愛好家の関心も薄い。宮城さんは昨年、沖縄本島で本種の生態を集中的に観察し、多くの貴重な記録を得た。今回ご紹介するのはその中のひとつである。

♂は♀から少し離れた場所でホバリングし、時折♀の上を一周して戻り、だんだん近づいて最後には♀の体に直接ぶつかってアピールするという生態が鮮明な映像で記録されている。こうした生態は文章で紹介するよりも映像で見れば一目瞭然である。

Movie File: The courtship behavior of Forest Quaker (Pithecops corvus)

This movie file is based on the presentation by MIYAGI, Akino of the last annual meeting. Ms. MIYAGI gave us the permission to use her video in this blog for those who could not join the meeting last year.

Forest Quaker (Pithecops corvus) is a sub-tropical or tropical Lycaenidae species which widely ranges from India to Indonesia. Japan is the northernmost of its distribution and only seen in Okinawa, southernmost islands. Few butterfly enthusiasts pay much attention to this species because it is tiny and usually keeps in shady forests. Ms. MIYAGI Akino, our society member, succeeded in finding a large colony of this species in Okinawa-jima last year. She extensively studied the ecology of this species. This video is one of her achievements.

An interesting behavior is filmed in this video. A male is hovering near a female and sometimes flying circle over a female. Then a male comes close to a female and starts to attack himself against her. This kind of behavior is easy to recognize visually, although it needs much effort to explain by texts.
