技術の進歩

　上の雑誌は今からおよそ半世紀前に発行された雑誌『インセクト・ジャーナル』である。発行元は「京浜昆虫同好会」、当時多くの虫屋が参加して隆盛を極めた伝説的な同好会である。この会についてのエピソードは多いが、きょう紹介したいのは裏面の広告である。

　裏表紙には、下記のトランシーバーの広告が掲載されているが、いかにも時代を感じさせて興味深い。何人かで採集地に行き、それぞれがトランシーバーを持ってリアルタイムで成果を報告し合う。当時の蝶屋には夢のような最新技術だったに違いない。
　それから半世紀。今では携帯電話を持って山の中に入るのが当たり前になってしまった。国内に限らず海外の採集地からだってリアルタイムで成果が伝えられる。画像だって携帯電話のメールで送れてしまう。
　50年後には、いったいどんな蝶との付き合い方をしているのだろうか。時代は変わり、技術が進歩しても、ギフチョウが舞う日本であって欲しいものだ。

The advance of technology

The above magazine is “Insect Journal” which was published in 1964 by a famous insect lovers’ association, “Keihin Konchu Doukoukai”. (“Keihin” means the Tokyo-Yokohama area) This association was quite prosperous then because many young insect lovers joined it. In this post, the author of this blog would like to introduce the advertisement on the back cover of the magazine.

This advertisement of the walkie-talkie vividly shows the atmosphere of the old days. At that time it must be the latest technology for butterfly lovers to go out in the field with walkie-talkies. By using them, they can simultaneously tell their situations and collecting results each other.

Fifty years have passed since then. Now everyone goes out in the field with a mobile phone. We can easily communicate each other not only in Japan but also from overseas. Even photos can be sent by a cellular phone without any difficulty.

The author does not have any idea how we will enjoy collecting or observing butterflies fifty years later. But he strongly hopes that Luehdorfia japonica, the Japanese endemic swallowtail shown in the advertisement, will be flying as it is even if the technology makes further progress and our way of life changes drastically in the future.
