絶滅した東京都のギフチョウ

　前回の記事で絶滅したオオウラギンヒョウモンの紹介をしたら割と評判が良かったので、今回も日本産の話題をひとつ。
　日本産の蝶の中でも最も人気が高いものは言わずと知れたギフチョウであろう。日本特産種、年に1回春にだけ現われる生態、均整のとれた美しさ。ギフチョウだけを集める愛好家がいるのも仕方ないと思わせるだけの華のある蝶である。まもなくギフチョウのシーズンが始まる。ギフチョウは秋田県から山口県まで局地的な分布をしているが、多くの場所で都市化の影響で生息地が失われ、姿を消してしまった。確実に絶滅してしまったとされる場所が多くあるが、その代表格が東京都だろう。今や1300万人を超える巨大都市となった東京に、かつてギフチョウが生息していた。西部の丘陵地帯に点々と見られたようで、1970年代初めまで記録があるようだ。
　昔から愛好家が多い東京なので、残されている標本も少なくはないが、何せ古いものが多く、保存状態が良好なものは少ない。その中でも今回図示した♀の標本は、まるで数年前に採集されたような美しいもので、退色もほとんど見られない。ラベルには「1961年4月9日、高尾山」とある。
　今やミシュランのガイドブックにも掲載されている観光名所、高尾山。そこにかつて確実に舞っていたギフチョウ。生きた姿を見る機会はもう永遠に失われてしまった。

Extinct population --- Luehdorfia japonica from Tokyo

One more topic on the extinct butterfly in Japan. Luehdorfia japonica is surely one of the most popular butterfly species in Japan. Endemic to Japan, this butterfly appears once in early spring. This beautiful swallowtail has been fascinating many butterfly enthusiasts. Some of them are so crazy at this butterfly that they are collecting only this species from many localities because it shows considerable local variation. From mid-March this butterfly will soon appear in several places in Japan.
This species ranges from Akita prefecture (northern Japan) to Yamaguchi prefecture (eastern Japan) sparsely, however many of its habitats had been lost because of the urbanization. One of such typical cases is Tokyo. The present population of Tokyo is more than thirteen million (13,000,000). This species used to be seen in Tokyo, especially in the suburb of western hillside. The record is confirmed until early 1970’s.
The specimens obtained in Tokyo are not so limited because there have been so many butterfly enthusiasts in Tokyo. However most of those specimens are now in bad condition because they are old. This specimen illustrated above is exceptionally fresh one. The original coloration has not lost at all and it seems to have been caught only a few years ago. The label reads “Mt. Takao, April 9, 1961”.
Now Mt. Takao is introduced in famous French guidebook “Michelin” as the tourists’ spot, so many overseas tourists are visiting there all year round. But they can never see this butterfly.
